Davidson has been called one of “the coolest suburbs in America,” but Savvy + Co. Real Estate agent and Davidson resident Allyson Dixon already knew that.
Wanting a shorter commute to Charlotte in an area with a small-town community feel, Allyson and her husband relocated from Mooresville to Davidson over five years ago.
With a quaint downtown area bustling with restaurants (including nationally recognized Kindred Restaurant), locally owned shops, and access to parks and Lake Norman, Davidson is a postcard town and an escape from the hustle and bustle of Charlotte. Allyson shares her five favorite things about living in Davidson and why you should consider moving there.
Community
With a population of just over 15,000, it’s easy to feel like you’re truly part of the community.
“There isn’t a time that I go to downtown Davidson and don’t see a friend or neighbor,” says Allyson.
Allyson’s neighborhood of Davidson East regularly hosts neighborhood events like Oktoberfest, community yard sales, pool parties and brings in food trucks for everyone to enjoy. Her neighborhood also hosts a monthly book club, hosts meal trains for neighbors, and has a volunteer committee that hosts monthly outreach projects for the greater Davidson community.
Allyson brings many of her clients to her neighborhood, as she loves making her clients her neighbors.
Things to Do
The town of Davidson hosts community events throughout the year. Events include Concerts on the Green, the Halloween March, Davidson Art Festival, and Christmas in Davidson.
In addition to events, Davidson also hosts the year-round Davidson Farmer’s Market, which supports local artisans and farmers. The area behind Summit Coffee is a spot perfect for families. The Town Green, located in front of the public library, hosts local events and is an ideal spot to relax with a book, a family picnic, and for Davidson College students to study.
The Food
Downtown Davidson is brimming with delicious food and cute coffee shops. Summit Coffee, Davidson Ice House, Flatiron Kitchen + Taproom, The Pickled Peach, and Whit’s Frozen Custard are local favorites, but it is Kindred Restaurant that put the Davidson culinary scene on the national map.
Davidson College
Davidson College is known as a prestigious liberal arts college, and where Steph Curry got his basketball career start. It has also become an integral part of the community.
Residents are season ticket holders. Students work in the shops and restaurants that line Main Street. There is even a program through Davidson where residents can “adopt” international students to make them feel more comfortable so far from home.
The stunning campus features large mature trees, ample green space, and historic buildings. The campus is open to the Davidson community for them to explore. The track is a great spot for weekend workouts or daily walks.
Lake Life
Davidson residents have access to Lake Norman and can take advantage of the mild North Carolina climate. From joining boat clubs to dining at restaurants on the lake, residents can enjoy the lake life with or without owning a boat.
“Davidson is very special,” says Allyson. “I love living here and can’t imagine living anywhere else. My neighborhood is the kind of place where you see kids riding bikes and ringing doorbells looking to play. Davidson, in general, has a special feel that is undeniable once you become a part of this town.”
